Vertigo is a symptom where a person feels dizzy and as if objects around him or her are rotating when they are not. Often it feels like a spinning or swaying movement. This may be associated with nausea, vomiting, sweating, or difficulties walking or even turning in bed. It is typically worse when you move your head. Vertigo is the most common type of dizziness. According to Ayurveda texts, it is caused because of Vata-Pitta imbalance.
Migraines can cause vertigo at times. Vertigo may occur following being exposed to motion (increase in Vata dosha) for a prolonged period. Alcohol intoxication and substance use can also cause this symptom.
Vertigo is not age related. It can occur at any age. However, it becomes more common with age and is believed to affect women two to three times more often than men.
Motion sickness is common and is related to Vata imbalance. It is nausea and vomiting in response to motion and is typically worse if the journey is on a winding road or involves lots of stops and starts, or if the person is reading in a moving car.
