Ojas is the essence of the tissues of Rasa – nutrient part of food that nourishes blood, Rakta – blood, Mamsa – fat, Meda – fats, Asthi – bones, Majja – bone marrow and nerves, and Shukra – regenerative tissues, semen and mentrual fluids.
According to Charaka, Ojas can be found in the heart. It is white, yellowish and reddish in colour. When it is produced first, it looks like ghee, tastes like honey and smells like fried paddy.
Your life force gets nourished from the food we eat, the actions we perform and the thoughts we think and feel.
Quality of Ojas
Ojas is oily, watery (viscosity), clear and is slightly yellowish and reddish in colour. According to Charaka Ojas is heavy, cold, smooth, soft, dense, sweet, clear, slimy and oily.
What causes depletion of Ojas?
Your life force can get depleted due to certain activities such as excessive physical activity, eating excessively hot to taste foods, drinking very hot water, loss of sleep, excessive masturbation and excessive sexual intercourse. These activities increase Vata and Pitta in the body resulting in a burnout.
Symptoms of depleted life force
When your life force decreases, the symptoms it produces are; fainting, multiple joint pains and lack of strength in joints, and muscular fatigue and depletion in muscle tone and muscular strength. Mental functions such as lack of concentration and weakened memory, excessive sleeping, indicate weak Ojas.
Ways to improve Ojas
There are ways to improve your life force. Ghee, milk or Indian Cow, yoga asana (horizontal poses only), Swasa Kriya (watching the breath), meditation and prayers improve your life force slowly and steadily. You must avoid foods that are hot to taste and that are pungent. You must Also avoid foods that cause dryness in the body. Sattvic foods improve Ojas. However, care must be taken to not overdo your diet.
